Located just a short way north of Las Vegas is the Moapa Valley National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge was first established in 1979 to protect the Moapa dace fish which are endemic to the headwater of the Muddy River system. The refuge is 116 acres, contains several thermal springs, and is the first refuge of its kind that was created to protect a species of fish. Since its establishment, the refuge has been able to increase the Moapa dace fish population up to 1,340 dace in the Muddy River System. Along the interpretive trail is a fish tank that is worth stopping by where you can view these magnificent fish. Aside from the Moapa dace fish there are several other species endemic to Moapa Valley such as the Moapa Pebblesnail, White River Springfish and the Moapa riffle beetles.
This trail network is great for the family. The trails total less than 1 mile long and loop around the refuge. Several interpretive signs are located along the trail to help you learn and understand your surroundings. Although small, this refuge is packed with information and excitement people of all ages can enjoy!
For more information and the current status of trails visit the US Fish and Wildlife Service website.
During normal operation, the refuge is open Friday-Sunday, September through May and is always free to visit.
Due to the refuges sensitive habitat and on going restoration efforts, the refuge is closed June - August.
