Set on the western shoulder of Peavine Mountain near the border of California, the Peavine Maze motorized network of trails is one of the only moto-legal singletrack networks in Nevada set in alpine terrain, a handful of miles from Reno city limits. The Maze trails are ideal for intermediate to advanced moto riders, featuring a combination of smooth flowing singletrack and rocky technical challenges. With a mix of ponderosa pine, cedar and aspen trees growing in decomposed granite soil around garage-size granite boulders, the alpine terrain within the Maze network has a distinct Lake Tahoe feel.
Thanks to a recent maintenance grant funded by Nevada State Parks Recreational Trails Program (RTP), the Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship (SBTS) has been conducting extensive improvements to the 8.5 miles of legal motorized singletrack. Concurrently, SBTS is working with the Humboldt Toiyabe National Forest on a Nevada OHV planning grant for up to 19 miles of new motorized-legal singletrack, providing more sustainable trail with better connectivity within the network, allowing for larger loop opportunities. Also proposed in the planning project is an official singletrack connection to the East Zone motorized singletrack network near Stampede Reservoir in California, linking into the larger Connected Communities project. There will also be a new trailhead and singletrack into the Maze from Dry Creek Summit off Highway 395 north of Reno.
The Maze area also features natural surface system roads for four-wheel vehicles connecting from Northwest Reno up and over Peavine Mountain and out to Cold Springs.
Camping available at Look out Campground.
