The Rosewood Nature Study Area is a 220-acre wetland area that hosts an ongoing project to restore a decommissioned golf course into a wetland habitat. Owned by the City of Reno and stewarded by Great Basin Institute, the Rosewood Nature Study Area offers public access to the natural world and outdoor recreation opportunities.
The site that is now the Rosewood Nature Study Area opened as a municipally-owned golf course in 1991. Due to the construction of Veterans Parkway, the Rosewood Lakes Golf Course was decommissioned and permanently closed in 2015. After closure, the property provided an opportunity for native plant and wildlife habitat enhancement, while also improving site access for public outdoor recreation. In 2025 the City of Reno partnered with Great Basin Institute (GBI) to lease the facilities. Drawing upon the expertise of GBI’s Nevada Conservation Corps (NCC), the institute will work to facilitate public access and maintain the area’s trails. This 219 acre parcel is now home to over 1,500 native plants and several species of migratory and resident birds and close to both the Tahoe Pyramid Bike path and Veterans Pkwy bike path.
The trails are relatively flat and a mix of paved and gravel surface. If the gravel surfacing is an issue for access, three GRIT Freedom Chairs are available for community use at the visitors center. On site is a brand new Adaptive Cycling Center with more adaptive equipment available for rent.
Aside from walking the trails, other common activities include birdwatching, wildflower viewing and fishing!
Surfaces: Wide trails with a mix of packed and loose gravel/dirt and pavement
Trail difficulty: Relatively flat with little to no grade.
Dogs and other pets are not permitted on the trails or in the water at Rosewood.
Hours: Monday – Saturday: 9:00am to 4:00pm (Actual access hours may vary depending on personnel and weather/site conditions.)
Restrooms are available inside the administration building during operating hours.
Drinking water is available inside the administration building during operating hours.
The pavilion on the south side of the administration building may be used for picnics unless otherwise posted or occupied.
Fishing and wildlife viewing docks are available east of Veterans Parkway.
Bike racks are available on the west side of the administration building.
