Lovelock’s historic Marzen House Museum is the starting point for the byway. Pick up a BLM self-guided tour book and children’s activity book at the kiosk at the museum or at the Lovelock Chamber of Commerce and follow the signs to Lovelock Cave. Along the way you’ll tour historic Lovelock, view wild birds, cross the California Emigrant Trail, and explore Lovelock Cave, used by Native Americans for more than 4500 years to store items, including the world’s oldest duck decoys. At the cave there are interpretive signs, a self-guided nature trail hike and bathroom/picnic facilities. The driving tour to Lovelock Cave is a 40 mile roundtrip and makes for an enjoyable side trip.
This back country byway tells the story of "Man and Water", comparing modern and prehistoric man's use of the water resoruces of the Humbodt Sink. As you drive through the agriculture fields to the Lovelock Cave, you also take in the drastic advancements in modern day agriculture compared to the nomic lifestyle of the past.
