The surrounding trails are rugged and diverse ranging from glacial carved highlands to steep canyons. The ecosystems ranges diversely from pinyons and aspens at the higher elevations and sagebrush in the lowlands. The Toiyabe Crest National Recreation trail is the highlight of this mountain range, spanning almost the entire ridgeline of the mountains. Several other backpacking opportunities are present throughout the mountain range , as well as primitive camping and historical sites. At the very north end of the Toiyabe Range is Austin, which is a fun historical town with several opportunities for off-roading, mountain biking and horseback riding!
The Arc Dome wilderness area is one of Nevada's largest wilderness areas spanning over 115,000 acres. The highest point in the Arc Dome wilderness is the Arc Dome summit at an elevation of 11,773 ft. A short spur trail off of the Toiyabe Crest National Recreation Trail will lead you to this summit. Wildlife is abundant in the area including big horn sheep, deer and grouse. Fishing for trout is popular in the Reese River, South Twin Creek and North Twin Creek river.

Given that portions of the Toiyabe Mountain Range are designated wilderness, only hikers and equestrians are allowed within the wilderness boundary. Motorized and mechanized use is only permitted on surrounding non-wilderness trails. Please be respectful of the wilderness boundary and only travel on designated roads and trails for your activity type. Horses are allowed and only certified weed free hay can be brought in. Currently, USDA Forest Service policy considers E-Bikes to be motorized vehicles, and therefore, are restricted to roads and trails designated for motorized use.
Hunting and fishing are permitted within the wilderness boundary.

If visiting Berlin-Ichthyosaur State Park, the mountain range can be accessed from there. Another major access point is from the southern end near Carvers.
